The Willful and the Gentle

on Fri Sep 07, 2018 4:30 pm
"Alright, Lupo! Let's do that one more time!" Cinnary said.

The lilac-haired girl was along Route 6 enjoying the open air and rocky terrain that surrounded her. While it was nice to become more familiar with the big city such as Oolong, she had to admit to missing the wilderness, and particularly the mountains. She used to go up to the mountains every weekend with her father when he trained her on now fighting moves, and now Cinnary was doing the same with Lupo.

She looked at the young Riolu, who in turn was staring at her intently and awaiting instruction. The two would do a series of strikes and poses that her father had taught her. Instead of actually hitting something, they were focused on improving their form by demonstrating different punches, kicks, stances, and the like.

"One! And two! And three!" she said.

"Ra! Ra! Ra!" Lupo said in unison.

It was just like being back at home.

Another beautiful day was hitting Kagawa, as the nearby Pidgeys sang to they four winds. It was at the outskirts of Ginger City where a young teenager and his pokémon were located, the most recent arrivals to the Kagawa Region. It was none other than Herbert and his Cyndaquil Cinder, taking a stroll around these paths, a look of expectation in their faces. But what were those two doing? Well, since he managed to find a moment of free time, he wanted to try and get acquainted with the outer regions.

That, and his mom asked him if he could search for some berries.

"Alright Cinder," He started, looking at the pokémon on his shoulder. "from what I was told, there are edible berries around that direction." the direction he pointed to was incidentally the same direction where, without them looking, Cinnary and Lupo were training. "Lets try get some and go back, alright? And try to not eat them before time." One finger went to gently poke the underside of his chin, as Cinder let out a small noise of approval. "Good, lets get going." As they got closer to the bushes however, moving a tall one aside caused the sight of the girl and the pokémon training. He looked at a sight, meaning that if he kept his head low, he'd manage to keep viewing her.

He hasn't seen her around town, could it be that she was someone out of town? Perhaps some Trainer in, well, training? Herbert's curiosity but ambivalence about approaching her made him stay where he was, to the point that he didn't notice that Cinder moved out of his shoulder. Almost like a silent creature, he moved closer to Cinnary and Lupo, and standing relatively close to them, as if he was another student, began doing poses as well. However, these were far from the martial arts poses the two they were making, Cinder was instead posing like a superhero. It was then when Herbert not only noticed that Cinder was missing, but that he was there, with the two of them. There was a look of alarm in his face, as he didn't know if to approach the girl or try to gesture Cinder to run away. But poor Herbert, his Cyndaquil was having a blast.

Ken was exhausted. Between his duties as a Gym Leader and his profession as a private investigator, he didn't have a lot of time to rest. But he had his responsibility, he couldn't just abandon the gym after all. It wouldn't be fair to the League, Tulsi Town, or all the trainers who trained there. Ken just had to survive for a bit longer, for the sake of everyone else. Who knows, maybe he'll convert it back into a regular dojo again when he's ready to retire from being a P.I.

Route 6 was always a nice place to go and relax. Unlike the alternative route, this one was less rocky and it was nestled next to the river. It was always nice to dip his toes in the water off of a bridge, chat with the few fishermen who caught Pokemon on the route and just enjoy nature. His Pokemon were also fairly fond of the place too.

He began approaching his usual spot when he noticed two kids out on the route. That wasn't surprising, but the scene that was unfolding was. There was a girl who was doing martial arts poses with her Riolu, with a Cyndaquil standing there doing poses like... a superhero? Ken was pretty sure that the Cyndaquil was probably not her's, but belonged to the other kid who looked like he was spying on her. He sighed and began approaching the two.

The two would see a tall man with a muscular frame approaching. He had light brown skin, light blond hair tied into a short ponytail, and was wearing a light brown trenchcoat over a red dress shirt, a black tie, and a pair of black dress pants.

"Spying on a girl, huh?" He said to the boy. "I can think of better activities." He said. It sounded like he was joking, but his face remained serious and stoic while he spoke, so it was probably hard to interpret that. Ken looked over at the girl. "I'm assuming your Cyndaquil ran off from you?" He waved at the girl. "Seems you have an unexpected student."

As Cinnary and Lupo engaged in their routine, she was surprised to find that someone else was there. It was a Cyndaquil, and a rather cute one at that. And while he or she wasn't necessarily doing poomsae, it was doing poses in unison with their movements. She couldn't help but smile, but she didn't stop until she was called out by a tall man who was in the company of another boy. She finished with one last pose before nodding at Lupo and then calling out to them.

"It seems so!" she said. "Your Cyndaquil is really good at it, too!"

Cinnary would then approach the Cyndaquild, bending her knees a bit and looking at it happily.

"Did you want to learn fighting stances, too?" she asked. Meanwhile, the Riolu at her side was staring at it rather warily, as if keeping out just in case it tried anything tricky.

"Ra!" it barked gruffly.

"Come on Cinder... walk away..." The young teen muttered, as he tried his best to signal his Cyndaquil into walking away, to no avail. The Pokémon was too entranced in the posing the other two were doing, that he didn't notice Herbert at all. His eyes would, at random intervals, turn to the girl and her pokémon in training, and whenever that happened... For some reason, he felt it hard to look away.

However, he needed to recover his pokémon somehow, lest he wanted to face her wrath! His hand eventually went to his hips, as he tried to hastily search for his pokéball, a search that was not yielding good results. "Nnng, where is it...?" And in his haste, he didn't realize Ken approached him about his situation. Or rather, assumed he was stalking the girl. "Gah!" He yelped, as he turned to see him, his imposing figure intimidating Herbert.

"I-I-I was not spying on her! I w-was just-"
He began, when Ken asked him if the Cyndaquil was his, which made Herbert nod at him frantically. "Y-Yes, he's a bit ditzy, but don't worry, I got it under-" But much to his horror, Ken decided to actually call he girl out, causing his skin to go as pale as a ghost. Oh no, not only her training was interrupted, now he's gonna have to give her explanations while making sure Ken didn't give her false information about being a creep. He let out a nervous chuckle, unsure over what to answer the girl, until she turned to Cinder, who let out a happy cry at Cinnary's question, almost as if he was excited to learn whatever she would teach him.

"Y-You'll have to excuse him, he can get rather excited." He said, as he made his way towards the trainer. "I'm sorry for interrupting your training. I was just looking for berries, a-and he ran off." Given the way he was looking at the floor with apprehension, it was hard to tell if he was looking at Cinder, or at his feet.

Ken rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry, kid. That was a joke, but it was inappropriate, wasn't it?" He said to Herbert. This is what he got for trying to be funny. Oh well. At least the girl wasn't angry or anything that she had a tagalong, but it was probably for the best that a trainer's Pokemon stayed with them. At the mention of berries, Ken raised an eyebrow. "Route 6 isn't the best place to look for berries. It's pretty rocky and seeing how close it is to the river, there's not a lot of places for them to grow. Route 8 would have been better, despite being a marsh, there are a few berry trees lying around." He explained. "However, I have seen a few Sitrus Berry trees somewhere here before..." Ken could probably help, he just needed to remember where they were.

He studied Cinnary for a moment. She was definitely taught by someone who was into martial arts. Most likely a fighting type specialist. She wasn't one of his students, that's for sure. "So, who taught you those poses. Not many people know that's a good way to train your Pokemon. Especially fighting types."

Hearing Cinder exclaim in excitement made Cinnary smile brightly.

"You're very welcome to keep joining us," she said. And then looking up at Herbert, she giggled a bit. "Though, I think you should ask your trainer if that's okay, hm?"

Herbert and Ken were quick to come over. Hearing Herbert's apology, the young girl waved her hand nonchalantly.

"Oh, you don't have to worry about it," she said. And then turning back to Cinder who was now slightly being circled by Riolu curiously, she giggled.
"He's quite the fast learner."

When Ken then made his own remark, she lit up.

"Oh, my dad taught me! He's a local martial arts fighter back at home! He taught me everything I know now," she said. "And yeah, fighting stances are a great way in helping Riolu build up his skill. He has to be quick to attention and keep balanced while doing everything and all that. Eheh, not that I'm perfect at it, myself. We're trying to learn together!"

She smiled sheepishly, slightly blushing as if she was recalling an old blunder of hers. She then shook her head and offered her hand for Herbert and Ken to shake.

"I'm Cinnary, by the way!" she said. "It's nice to meet you two! And Cinder, of course!"

Meanwhile, Riolu stood in front of Cinder with a blank expression his face.

"Ra..." he murmured before also extending his hand to have shaken.

"I-Isn't it? I should have known... I'm still very new to this region." He sheepishly said, feeling a bit relieved that Ken didn't take him for a liar or something. And even asked to help him in his search. "Ah, really? If you could help me, that'd be great." But what surprised him more was how Cinnary didn't seem to mind him at all. He feared that interrupting her training would cause her to either get mad at her, or accuse him of something unsavory.

Cinder meanwhile patted his feet on the ground excited as Cinnary said that he could join them. And even took the compliment very well, as he made another goofy pose at her. "Yeah, he has a lot of... enthusiasm." He brushed the back of his head with a hand, as she spoke with Ken about how she learned her moves. Is she aiming to become a martial arts fighter like her dad? Given how... small she seemed, he couldn't have guessed that, but seems one can't judge a book by it's cover, right?

"Nice to meet you Cinnary, I'm Herbert. Taylor." He introduced himself, as Cinder went ahead and shook Riolu's hand with both if his paws, a happy look on his face. "Quiii!"

"Eh... sure. I'll help you look." Ken replied. He scanned the surrounding areas for a few moments. "Just give me a minute to remember where they might be. It's been a while since I last saw them..." Granted, he didn't look for berries that often. He usually bought them from the store whenever possible as opposed to going out and looking for them. He was too busy training his Pokemon after all. How could he become a great trainer when he was busy looking for berries?

Ken smiled softly. "That's good then. Learn more and strive to become stronger alongside your partner. Who knows? Maybe you'll become a Gym Leader or even the Champion." He said to Cinnary. He remembered having those same feelings when he was her age. That was a while ago, and he was happy with how far he came. He realized that he should probably help the girl out too, seeing how it was a big part of his job to support new trainers. "You probably already know this, but stances and poses will only get you so far. Battles are the best way to learn, so be sure to accept them whenever possible." He explained. "Oh! And the Gym Leader in Tulsi Town specializes in Fighting Types, so he might be a good person to train with or ask questions. That is... if you can catch him before he runs off somewhere..." He said that last part while rubbing the back of his neck. He seemed... slightly embarrassed.

"Just call me Ken." He said. He turned to Herbert. "I have a good idea of where those berries are. Did you want to follow me?" He looked at Cinnary too. "You're welcome to come along if you like."
